The Freedmen's Bureau

The Freedmen’s Bureau was initiated by President Lincoln on March 3, 1865 during Reconstruction to aid former slaves through food, housing, education, health care and employment contracts.  It was disbanded in 1871 by President Ulysses S.Grant.
