Andrew A. Zvara

Andrew A. Zvara– Andy has been a passionate, cutting edge leader in secondary education for over three decades. Starting as a science teacher at The Newport School in Kensington, Maryland in six years he rose to become Headmaster under his leadership, Newport grew to include middle and high school programs. As Head of the Baltimore Lab School (a division of the Lab School of Washington), Andy again had the pleasure of presiding over the first high school graduation in a school’s history. As Director of Professional Development for the Virginia Association of Independent Schools, Andy expanded and improved program offerings and services to member schools.

With an A.B. in Chemistry and Zoology from Oberlin College and an M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Maryland, Andy has throughout his career sought and completed training at such institutions as The Aspen Institute, Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, and the Augsburg Paideia Institute. He has been an active member on the Board of Trustees of the Association of Independent Schools of Greater Washington, the Association of Independent Maryland Schools, Green Acres School, and Round House Theatre, and was a founder of the Family Support Center, a non-profit organization that helps schools and families recognize and deal with mental health and behavioral issues in K-12 students. In 1996, he was one of 5000 community leaders across the nation selected to carry the Olympic torch.
